Question: What is a baitcast reel and how do you cast it?
Answer: A baitcaster is a real that sits on top of your rod as opposd to a spinning reel that hangs below. It can be used with lures OR bait. The lines comes off the reel in a level fashion--not unwound sideways like a spinning reel. With spinning reels you can get line twist, which tangles your line. Since baitcasters' line comes off without twisting, you don't have that problem. It takes more pactice to use a baitcaster and you can't cast into the wind without backlashing--very annoying.
I use both--each has it's own advantages. I prefer the baitcaster. It is lighter (less fatigue) and has a smaller profile easier to handle.

Question: Baitcast reel - Why turn sideways at end of cast?
On a variety of websites, I have read that when casting with a bait caster, at the end of the cast the reel should be turned "sideways" with the handle on top. Why is this?
Answer: A few years ago before there were so many improvements to the anti- back lashing features of the bait casters this was a method that helped out the back lashing problems of the older reels at that time. The instruction papers that came with the reels mentioned and would show in pictures this method to help out on the birds nest problems of the earlier reels. But now you can disregard this as something that helped out in the dark ages of bait casting. Today's reels are almost like casting a spin cast. You can go down to beetle spin lures and still cast them with the right line and the right rod. But in the old days it was almost impossible to cast any lure less then 1/2 ounce any distance if at all.
