Question: bait caster fishing reel gear ratio?
this will be my first bait caster reel and i am wondering if i should get a 6.4:1 gear ratio or a 5.2:1 gear ratio. my spinning reel is a 5.1:1. Most of my fishing is done off the shores with top water baits, small spinners, and all kinds of plastics.
Answer: The answer will depend on your personal preferences. For example, some people like to use a faster reel for topwater because they like to take up the slack quicker (and this depends on the technique you are using and also your personal style.) I would go with the faster ratio if you like to move your baits quicker and slower if you dont typically "burn" your baits through the water. I like using a slower reel for plastics (and as a result, I have several reels that cover the whole range but that isnt necessary unless you are very specific about the techniques that you will be using.) One question to ask is do you like using your slower spinning reel for your style of fishing? If the answer is yes then go ahead and pickup the 5:2:1. If you are missing fish on topwaters because you cant get the slack out of your line fast enough then go with the 6:4:1. I would recommend buying the most expensive baitcaster you can afford because quality seems to make more of a difference with baitcasters than with spinning reels.
